The Cardinal family, also called Apogonidae, belongs to the order of the Perciformes. They are found mostly in tropical and subtropical waters. Fishes are between 3 and 25cm long. They mainly live in flocks and are crepuscular or nocturnal. Also part of the order of Percoidei is the family of spade fish, which are also known under the name Ephippidae. They are located in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean. Depending on the type spade fish are up to 90cm tall. Their color is usually light with vertical brown or black stripes.
