Each freshwater snail species plays a specific role in aquarium maintenance, helping to create a healthy and balanced environment.
Neritina snails (Neritina natalensis or Neritina sp.) are excellent algae-eating snails and are particularly effective at grazing on stubborn algae growing on aquarium glass and decorations. They are highly valued for the remarkably clean surfaces they leave behind.
Because their reproduction requires brackish water, a mixture of freshwater and seawater, there is no risk of uncontrolled population growth in a freshwater aquarium.
Clithon snails are small freshwater snails with distinctive striped or spotted shells. They graze on algae and biofilm growing on aquarium decorations, substrate and other surfaces.
They do not damage aquatic plants and spend much of their time moving across the aquarium glass and decorations. This makes them particularly well suited to planted aquariums, where they contribute to the ecological balance of the aquarium.
Brotia pagodula, easily recognised by the pointed projections on its shell, is a distinctive freshwater snail that prefers well-oxygenated water and contributes to the natural recycling of organic matter.
Unlike many other aquatic molluscs, Brotia pagodula is a livebearing snail. Its cleaning role is more discreet than that of Neritina or Clithon snails, but it still contributes effectively to keeping the aquarium clean.
Tylomelania snails are relatively large freshwater aquarium snails, generally reaching 6 to 10 cm. They spend most of their time on the substrate, where they feed on leftover food and organic matter.
In a very clean aquarium, they should be provided with suitable sinking food for invertebrates to supplement their diet. Breeding Tylomelania in an aquarium is possible provided that a minimum temperature of 28°C is maintained.
Tylomelania are also known for their wide variety of colours, ranging from deep black to bright yellow.
Anentome helena, commonly known as the assassin snail, helps control populations of unwanted aquarium snails. As a carnivorous species, it provides a natural and effective way to maintain a balanced snail population in a freshwater aquarium.
It may attack larger snails when food is scarce or when several individuals hunt together. Introducing Anentome helena can also help naturally control the proliferation of certain small snail species that may become harmful to aquatic plants.
Successful freshwater snail care requires stable water parameters. Temperature, pH, water hardness and calcium levels all influence their development and the strength of their shells. Water that is too acidic or poorly balanced can weaken these aquatic molluscs and slow their growth.
Neritina and Septaria porcellana naturally find food by grazing on microalgae and organic biofilm growing on aquarium surfaces. Brotia pagodula and Tylomelania feed more extensively on deposits found on the substrate.
In a very clean aquarium, Tylomelania should be given suitable supplementary food to prevent nutritional deficiencies.

Freshwater snail overpopulation can occur when more food is available than needed or when the aquarium ecosystem becomes unbalanced. Excess food encourages rapidly reproducing species to multiply quickly.
To help control freshwater snail populations, reduce the amount of food added to the aquarium, carry out regular aquarium maintenance and introduce a snail population regulator such as Anentome helena, while monitoring its behaviour.
